War Against Northern Aggression
This webpage is dedicated to my ancestors who served in the CSA during the War Between The States. I have 6 great great uncles (brothers) on the Richardson side and also have on the Hodo side those that served. Special thanks to my brother for the countless hours that he has done in the genealogical research of our Richardson family. Without him doing that, I would not be able to tell of the dedication of our ancestors to the Southern cause.

On the Richardson side, the six brothers were all privates. One died in camp where he mustered in, probably due to disease. My Richardson ancestors did not own slaves. Over 94% of the white Southerners did not own slaves (
link). One source I found shows that prior to hostilities breaking out in 1861, the Federal government recieved 87% of their revenues from tariffs on imported goods that entered in the country through Southern ports. At that time there was no income taxes being collected by the government. Slavery may have been a big issue but that was not the main issue that cause the South to secede. State's rights played an important part in deciding to secede. Prior to this in the early 1800's, there were Northern states who threatened to secede for different reasons.

I have confirmed that William, John, Robert, James, Samuel and Thomas served by finding them in rosters. Also have copies of Samuel's and Thomas's service records from the Mississippi Department of Archives and History.

Nearly all of the above information on the Richardsons is from "Descendants of Samuel Richardson and Rachel Owen" compiled by Robert P. (Bobby) Richardson. There is a seventh brother, but he was born in 1850; therefore, too young to serve. He is my great grandfather Warren Monroe Richardson. Samuel Richardson, my great great grandfather, was too old to serve (DOB 02/17/1809, SC).
