| This monument is located about 1 mile west of West Point Mississippi on Hwy 50. The bridge is no longer standing. General Nathan Bedford Forrest routed a larger Yankee force thereby keeping Columbus Mississippi from being burnt. Many fine antebellum homes remain today because of this. I originally wasn't going to put anything other than Mississippi History Markers on this website but this was an important engagement for this area. Many of the markers that are in Columbus might not be there today if it wasn't for this Southern victory. After the War Against Northern Aggression, Gen. Robert Lee was asked who was his best general. He replied that it was one he never had met, General Nathan Bedford Forrest. |
